Fabric and Drainage
Rock vs. Using Neither

A high percentage of the Playmate® Play Area Wood Chips® that have been installed over the past ten years have been installed 8" deep after compaction over our tough woven fabric that has high UV light resistance. The fabric is available in 10', 12' and 15' wide rolls. All rolls are 300' in length.

Under the fabric some customers choose to install four inches of 3/8"-1/2" washed river gravel. This helps moisture to drain away from the chips helping them to last longer and seems to enhance the cushion as well.

This is a good system and many customers choose to install in this manner therefore you will see that one of our test reports is specific to this "package" - eight inches of Playmate® Play Area Wood Chips® over fabric and four inches of 3/8"-1/2" washed river gravel. ALL playgrounds should receive daily inspection and regular maintenance, however, it is of particular importance when two different items (rock & chips) are installed one on top of the other. The fabric will keep the two items separate but not if you allow the chips to get worn away in high traffic areas such as the base of a slide or under swings.

Recently we've seen a trend among our customers, who have well drained soil and positive drainage away from their playgrounds, to use 12" or more of our Playmate® Play Area Wood Chips® without drainage rock and fabric beneath the wood chips.

Early indications are that customers are very satisfied with this way of doing things and renovation will be much easier when it's time to "core out" and start over.

After years of service under your playground equipment our old product, removed during the "coring out" portion of a renovation product, is available for a second use as an excellent horticultural soil amendment. It doesn't seem to be hard to find a home for this valuable humus.

Savings on material cost as well as labor can be substantial when using this simplified system.
